I first became interested in home aircraft construction in 1970 when I sent away for the BD-4 construction information. That's as far as I got at the time as I had too many children and not enough money. In 1996/97 I helped a friend construct his RV-6 . The building bug hit me again. After a through search I chose the Bushby Mustang II. I liked the Mustang II because I wanted a fast cross country plane with side-by-side seating for two. (I really wanted the four place Velocity, but was afraid I didn't have the skills or patience for composite construction, plus the kit was too expensive.) I liked the lines of the Mustang II better that the RV line of aircraft, and with the same wing as a P-51, it's a faster airplane as well. I also chose the folding wing option as I thought that would make the wings easier to remove. I think that was a mistake as I won't be removing the wings that much and it makes the plane slightly more expensive and a bit heavier. I started construction in February 2000. As of June 2001, I have about 900 building hours with the center section, forward fuselage, tail cone and flap almost finished. I should still have a year or two to go before it is finished. |
