N747JP was built from plans and is constructed entirely of aluminum. Power is a Lycoming O-360, 160 hp engine with a wood Sensenich propeller. First flight was in 1984 and the airplane has been flown regularly since that time with more than 1800 hours in the log book as of the end of 2003. Jim's airplane won the coveted Wright Brothers Trophy at Oskhosh in 1987. Jim and Judy regularly fly all over the country, often getting together with other T-18 owners in such places as Leadville, Colorado (highest field in the nation), as well as at the annual fly-in at Kentucky Lake which pretty much wouldn't be possible without their enthusiasm and continued support. Jim is also a regular commuter to Sun 'n Fun in Lakeland. Jim keeps his Thorpe in his home hangar on Johnson
Field adjacent to Hendersonville Airport, along with at times as many as
3 other T-18s. Jim is a certified A&P mechanic with an
Inspection Certificate, and has served many years as our chapter's
EAA Technical Counselor
with dozens of projects under his wing at one time or another.
Jim's most recent endeavor is becoming a
Designated Volunteer Airworthiness
Representative which will enable him to complete
certifications for all experimental aircraft as well as existing
aircraft which will qualify under the new Sport Pilot and Aircraft
regulations.
